NS selects publicroam as the standard for secure Wi-Fi access at stations, waiting rooms and work locations

Secure and user-friendly Wi-Fi access for employees, with access for travellers at selected locations

Utrecht, January 27 – Dutch railway operator NS has implemented publicroam at its offices, (maintenance) sites and 83 stations. With this step, NS opts for a high security standard for Wi-Fi access at locations where employees and travellers spend time.

Secure Wi-Fi access for employees

Every day, thousands of NS employees work at stations and work locations. By choosing publicroam, NS enables employees to connect to Wi-Fi automatically and securely using their own device. This additional Wi-Fi network offers a simple login process and minimal risk of wireless interception or data leaks. As a result, private devices and personal data also remain safe during day-to-day use.

Access for travellers at selected locations

At locations where travellers tend to stay longer, such as waiting rooms, publicroam also offers visitors an easy and privacy-friendly way to get online. Travellers register once for free and then connect automatically at all participating locations. Publicroam has been seamlessly integrated into the existing network and is now available at 83 railway stations.

Simple, secure and privacy-friendly

With publicroam, NS chooses a Wi-Fi solution that meets high security standards and is based on privacy by design. Users are not tracked and do not need to disclose personal data at every new location. This approach aligns with the way NS addresses digital security and reliability in other parts of its services.

“For NS, secure digital access is first and foremost important for our employees. At the same time, it makes sense that travellers can easily and safely go online in places where they spend time, such as waiting rooms. With publicroam, we are organising this in a controlled and privacy-friendly way.”

Quote from NS

“NS is making a pragmatic and well-considered choice by deploying secure Wi-Fi access where it is actually used. That is exactly what Publicroam is designed for: a secure standard for public and work environments, with privacy and ease of use as core principles.”

About Publicroam

Publicroam is a Dutch initiative that securely and automatically connects visitors at public venues to Wi-Fi networks. Users register once for free and then connect automatically at all participating offices and public spaces: from municipalities, libraries and museums to schools, ports and cultural institutions. Publicroam was founded in 2017 by Ted Dinklo and Paul Francissen and won the Dutch Privacy Award in 2020. Today, more than 1,700 locations are connected and over 500,000 people use the network.
