Amsterdam, 21 October 2026 – Hegg Energy is introducing Smart Charging, enabling electric vehicles to charge automatically when electricity is cheaper and as green as possible. The smart charging feature determines the most favourable times to charge. In addition, Hegg enables EV drivers to automatically earn and sell ERE certificates, with no fixed fees and a commission of just 10%. This allows EV drivers to save hundreds of euros per year, make greater use of solar and wind energy, and help reduce pressure on the electricity grid.
Smart Charging responds to dynamic electricity prices, which fluctuate throughout the day. As soon as an electric vehicle is plugged in at home, Hegg automatically determines the most favourable time to charge based on the user's preferred charging schedule. This means users no longer have to monitor energy prices themselves or manually plan their charging sessions.
With Smart Charging, intelligent charging management is now available for a wide range of popular electric vehicle brands, including Tesla, Volkswagen, Volvo, BMW, Audi, Mercedes, Renault, Hyundai, Nissan, Peugeot, Škoda and Ford.
Smart Charging is part of Hegg Intelligence, which automatically manages flexible energy consumption. Through the Hegg App, users can connect their electric vehicle, set charging schedules and gain insight into how their charging is intelligently managed. Other devices, such as home batteries, can also be connected to the app.
According to Hegg Energy, EV drivers can save hundreds of euros per year with Smart Charging. Vehicles are charged as much as possible when electricity is cheaper and the availability of solar and wind energy is high. This allows renewable energy to be used more efficiently and helps prevent electric vehicles from charging primarily during more expensive peak periods.
As an additional service, Hegg Energy offers ERE Rewards. EV drivers with a charging station equipped with a built-in, certified MID meter can automatically earn ERE certificates and have them traded annually. Hegg enables registration through an integration with Plugchoice, after which the certificates are collected automatically. Hegg charges a commission of just 10% for registering ERE certificates, compared with commissions of up to 25% charged by other service providers.
The growth of electric driving is increasing demand for electricity. When large numbers of vehicles charge simultaneously during the evening peak, pressure on the electricity grid increases further. By automatically shifting charging to more favourable times, available grid capacity can be used more efficiently.
“The transition to electric driving is important. But when most cars start charging at around the same time, it puts enormous pressure on our electricity grid,” says Wesley de Kruijff, CEO of Hegg Energy. “At the same time, there are periods when plenty of renewable electricity is available. With Smart Charging, we bring the two together. This makes electric driving more affordable and helps us use the energy available to us more efficiently.”
Hegg Energy was founded to create a greener future through innovative energy solutions. As part of The Sharing Group, which also includes companies such as MyWheels and EnergyZero, Hegg Energy strives to maximise social impact while minimising environmental impact. With a focus on community-driven energy solutions, Hegg Energy works together with consumers to build the energy network of the future, in which the supply and demand of renewable electricity are matched as efficiently as possible.
