EnergyZero introduces gas price cap for dynamic energy contracts

Consumers protected against extreme gas prices this winter while retaining the benefits of dynamic energy pricing

Rotterdam, 13 October 2026 – EnergyZero, a pioneer of dynamic energy pricing in the Netherlands, is introducing a gas price cap for its dynamic energy contracts. With its Gas Price Cap, consumers can continue to benefit from dynamic energy prices while their monthly gas price is capped at €1.24 per m³ for twelve months if market prices rise sharply. The introduction comes amid growing uncertainty in the European gas market ahead of winter.

The gas market has once again experienced significant volatility in recent months. In early October, the Dutch wholesale gas price stood at around €74 per MWh, more than double the level recorded a year earlier. In mid-September, prices reached their highest level since late 2022. Relatively low gas reserves are also contributing to uncertainty: the Dutch government recently lowered its national gas storage target from 115 to 93 TWh. According to Gasunie, this does not mean that security of supply is at risk, but it does leave the Netherlands less prepared for an exceptionally cold winter.

This uncertainty is prompting more consumers to seek greater price stability. In early September, energy comparison platforms had already reported a sharp increase in interest in fixed-rate energy contracts. However, fixed contracts also have a downside: if energy prices fall, consumers cannot benefit from those lower prices during the contract period.

Dynamic energy as an alternative ahead of the end of the net metering scheme

With its Gas Price Cap, EnergyZero aims to offer a middle ground between a fully dynamic and a fixed-rate energy contract. Gas prices continue to follow market movements as long as they remain below the agreed cap. If the average dynamic gas price in a given month exceeds €1.24 per m³, EnergyZero compensates customers for the difference above the agreed price cap.

“Renewed tensions in the gas market are creating uncertainty. The Dutch net metering scheme will also end on 1 January 2027, prompting more solar panel owners to consider dynamic energy contracts to get more value from the electricity they generate. With our price cap, we offer a middle ground: customers benefit from low dynamic prices while knowing the maximum price they will pay for gas,” says Hans Valk, CEO of EnergyZero.

Twelve months of protection

The protection applies for twelve months. EnergyZero calculates each customer's average dynamic gas price on a monthly basis. If this exceeds the agreed cap, the difference is automatically compensated and credited on the annual energy bill.

The energy contract itself remains cancellable on a monthly basis without penalties. Customers pay an additional surcharge on the procurement fee per cubic metre of gas for the price cap.

Both new and existing EnergyZero customers can use the service. Existing customers can activate the Gas Price Cap through the EnergyZero app. The price cap offered to new customers may change in the future.
