MyWheels expands in Utrecht with 40 new electric Renault 4s

Utrecht, 29 October 2026 – Car-sharing provider MyWheels is expanding its fleet in Utrecht with 40 new electric Renault 4s, bringing the total number of MyWheels shared cars in the city to 430. The new vehicles are part of a nationwide expansion involving 450 electric shared cars. More than 80% of the MyWheels fleet is now fully electric, making it the largest electric car-sharing fleet in the Netherlands.

The fully electric Renault 4 has a driving range of 310 kilometres, making it suitable for both short trips around the city and longer journeys beyond Utrecht. With 420 litres of boot space, there is plenty of room for groceries, a pushchair or luggage for a weekend away. The first 26 Renault 4s have already been deployed at various locations across Utrecht, including Lombok, Hoograven, Ondiep and Leidsche Rijn. They are available to book immediately through the MyWheels app. The remaining 14 vehicles will be

introduced at a later date.

A car nearby whenever you need one

With this expansion, MyWheels aims to give more Utrecht residents access to a shared car close to home for occasions when cycling or public transport is not a practical option. This makes car sharing an attractive alternative to owning a vehicle that sits unused for much of the time.

“In Utrecht, you can get around easily by bike or public transport, but for some journeys, a car is simply more practical,” says Bas van der Kolk, Regional Manager for Utrecht at MyWheels. “Ultimately, it's about having access to a car whenever you need one, without having to own one yourself. With 40 new Renault 4s, we're making this possible for more Utrecht residents. These Renault 4s also support bidirectional charging, meaning they can both draw electricity from the grid and feed it back.”

Electric shared cars as ‘mobile neighbourhood batteries’

The expansion in Utrecht is part of a nationwide addition of 450 electric shared cars. With 40 new Renault 4s, Utrecht will receive the second-largest number of this model in the expansion, after Amsterdam. MyWheels is also expanding its fleet in cities including Eindhoven, Rotterdam and The Hague.

Following the expansion, more than 80% of MyWheels' nationwide fleet is now fully electric. In Utrecht, that figure stands at 94%.

The new Renault 4s can also play a role in the energy system. Together with We Drive Solar and Renault Group, MyWheels is working on Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) technology, which enables electric vehicles to feed electricity back into the power grid. In Utrecht, electric shared cars are already being used as ‘mobile neighbourhood batteries’. These vehicles can help manage peaks in electricity demand and reduce pressure on the power grid.
